Biography

EARLY YEARS: On the 1880 census John's birthplace was listed as Indiana, his father's birthplace Virginia and his mother's Kentucky. John was probably named Jonathan Jackson Carr, the same as his grandfather. In earlier days, children were often named for public figures, and his grandfather was likely named after Jonathan Jackson, a revolutionary war soldier known for his participation in the Battle of King's Mountain.
MARRIAGE: John and Telitha married in Iowa and most of their children were born there. However, James Austin and Joseph were born in Nebraska. It seems they went to Nebraska for a time. Was this because of the war?
MOVE TO ARKANSAS - In the fall of 1870 they moved to Bentonville, Arkansas, according to Hussong Manuscript. John and Telitha's two oldest daughters, Margaret Ann and Amelia Jane, married in 1875. Jane was quite young, possibly she was allowed to marry because her father was sick and they were having a hard time financially.
Family lore says John and Telitha owned Carr's Mill in the Roaring River area. In 1880, the census showed the John and Telitha and four children, Morgan, James, Joey, and Lilly lived in Roaring River Township, Barry County, Missouri. (Roaring River is now a Missouri State Park). John J. Carr was shown as 'unwell' on the 1880 census. The cause is difficult to read but appears to be Billious Fever, an early name for "Typhoid, malaria, hepatitis or elevated temperature and bile emesis".
From Chris Gill Lindsay notes: " In August & September of 1880, John Jackson Housong and his family (including son Edward M. who later authored the Hussong Manuscript) visited John's sister Telitha Emmaline and John Carr at their home in the Ozark Mountains in Barry County, Missouri. The location of their home was about eight miles northeast of Washburn and about twelve miles south of Cassville, the county seat of Barry County, on a small branch of Roaring River, in a valley called Dry Hollow. The above excerpt from "Telitha Emmeline Hussong" by Edward M. Hussong, and was compiled from notes he took from that visit that Emmeline called "The Hussong Story"."
EXERPTS FROM LETTER to Willam Morgan Carr & Dove Kennedy Carr dated April 17, 1886 stated that John J. and Telitha Emma lived around the Rocky Comfort School (Benton Co.) and they heard from grandfather (Austin) that he was not feeling so well. --from family history by Chris Lindsay, her source was probably Carr-Whitten Report.
CARR-WHITTEN REPORT by Albert Lee Carr (son of William Morgan Carr and Dove (Kennedy) Carr. Copies of the "Carr and Whitten Families of Albert Lee Carr"deposited in the major genealogical libraries in Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa, Arkansas, Texas, Georgia and Tennessee. He also states that a copy of the ancestral chart of Albert Lee Carr can be found, Volume 5, 1977, issue of The Arkansas Family Historian, Arkansas Genealogical Society, 4200 "A" Street, Little Rock, Arkansas 72205.
EXCERPTS FROM LETTER dated March 2, 1887, Dickson, P.O. Box Benton County, Arkansas. "Dear Son and Daughter... I am plowing out ground for old man Nichols down on his farm in Tanyard Holler. We have rented about 12 acres from him. We have built us a house... west of the south 40 acres... of the old man Nichols. Joey says that the girls won't have him... James Austin and Meedy... they live down in Crawford County on Lees Creek about one mile from Van Buren. They have another girl, her name is Lily Viola Parolee. Wash and Jane is well. They have three children. Mother says for you to come down and bring Berty. From all of us to Morgan and Dove. (Signed) J.J. Carr and family. The "old man Nichols" referrred to in the above letter was George Washington Nichols, father-in-law of Amelia Carr Nichols. --from Chris Lindsay notes, also probably from Carr-Whitten Report.
The reference to Tanyard Hollow and old man Nichols land, indicate that the J. J. Carr family probably lived in the SW NW Section 4, Township 20, Range 31 of Benton County in 1887. This is now (2013) located south of Lake Windsor in Bella Vista. Tanyard Creek was dammed to create Lake Windsor. (from GFoster 2013 notes: 24 Tillingham Lane, 1 Plymouth Circle, N36 26.582-W094 17.019, N36 26.589-W094 17.113)
John J. was buried in Dug Hill Cemetery in Benton County Arkansas (current day Bella Vista). There is no headstone with his name, but there are several graves in the old section at the top of the hill that are marked with fieldstones. [1]
DUG HILL COMMUNITY - so called because steps were dug into the hill so settlers could easily walk to the top. There once existed two churches, a school and a cemetery. Area named and cemetery started about 1867, per historical marker.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
