Disputed Origins

Many attempts have been made to link Robert and Caleb to various high born Scottish lineages. They were not born 4 Oct 1614 and 9 Dec 1616 to Benjamin, son of Sir William Kerr[1]

Biography

Robert Carr, son of Nicholas Carr, was baptized 18 July 1613 in Maidstone, Kent, England. His mother, the wife of Nicholas was Margaret (Carr) (Nelman) Carr.[2]

Robert Carr died 1681 at Newport, Rhode, Island, where he resided. He left a will on 20 Apr 1681; proved 4 Oct 1681.

Robert Carr, 21, a tailor and his brother Calebb Carr, 11, embarked 9 May 1635 and left the port of London on the Elizabeth & Ann bound for New-England.[3][4] The Carr Family Records states that Caleb was 19.[1] This is in order to reconcile his alleged birth (9 Dec 1616) with his age at sailing.

It is unknown where Robert lived when he first arrived, but on 21 Feb 1638/9, he was admitted as an inhabitant of Portsmouth, Rhode Island .[5] He was on the "Court Roll of Freeman" for the combined government of Portsmouth and Newport 16 March 1640/1,[5] and in 1655 he was in the Newport Section.[5]

In 1659 Robert, Caleb and others purchased the island Conanicut (Jamestown).

Robert participated monetarily, buying shares in the Monmouth Patent (New Jersey) along with many other Rhode Island citizens. Robert sold his share to Giles Slocum, of Newport, who bought it for his son John.[6]

Over the years Robert’s boat, house, brains and son were used to further the cause of the Colony or Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.[7]

  • 20 June 1670 his boat was used to transport person going to Narragansett as Commissioners from Rhode Island.
  • 26 Oct 1670 on a committee to make the rates for Conanicut Isalnd
  • 30 Jan 1671 allowed £9 for some public services done by him, his sloop and his hands.
  • 25 Sep 1671 appointed to make a rate and levy an assessment on Conanicut
  • 11 June 1677 the Assembly met at his house.
  • 15 Nov 1678 granted £1 4s. by the Assembly for service done by his son Caleb and his sloop transporting Magistrates to Narrragansett
  • 1680 taxed £1 5s. 1½d

Robert signed his name[8] and was on several committees to assess the residents of Conanicut Island in Narragansett Bay, for various expenses.[9]

Robert's will was dated 20 April 1681, and was proved in court 4 Oct 1681. "Robert Carr Senior of Newport... being bound a voyage to New York and New Jersey and being aged & not knowing how the Lord may deal with me"... he made bequests to his unnamed wife; eldest child Caleb; John Hicks, his children by my daughter Mary; son Robert Carr and his heirs of his body; son in law James Brown and his child he has by daughter elizabeht; son Esek; daughter Margaret.[10]

Due to lack of proof parents should be disconnected. Objections?

I Haven't found anything to connect Mary Hargreave to Robert Carr. Do you have a source? If not she will be disconnected. Objections.

Elizabeth Lawton & Elizabeth Unknown were the wife of Robert Carr (1658-1704), this Robert's son. Hearing no objections, I will disconnect her from this profile and merge her with the existing Elizabeth.
