William, born February 10, 1795 in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, is the son of Joseph Carr and Nancy Ann White Carr.
In 1834, William came to an area which later became Jefferson County and obtained a Mexican grant of one league on Taylor’s Bayou. His family of seventeen children was one of the largest in early-day Texas. For several decades, Carr was a leading cattleman, his herds numbering 500 head in 1850, 1,200 head in 1860 and 2,386 head in 1870.[1]
In 1819, he first married Nancy Ann Lee. Their children are:
William’s age is listed as 55 which matches his birth year of 1795. Jerusha Taylor, age 46, born in Maryland, is listed as a member of the household. Maybe she was a caregiver for the children whose mother had died in 1849.
Children listed above still in the household are Levi, Rachel, John, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Matilda, Serena and Alzena. Daughter Nancy was married (1840) by this date.[2]
On October 30, 1851 William married Charlotte Ender Holst. Charlotte was born on June 3, 1822 in Germany. She first married to a man named Ender. [3]

Charlotte had a son from a previous marriage, John R. Ender born October 10, 1849. He died on May 5, 1853 – aged 3 and is buried in Burrells Cemetery, Jefferson County, Texas - Find A Grave: Memorial #7424939 retrieved December 19, 2018.
This census lists William aged 65, Catherine (Charlotte) aged 37, born in Germany, and Arnele Holt (Holst) 24 born in Germany and Alzena aged 15 from her previous marriage.[4]
This census lists William aged 75, Charlotte aged 47, born in Prussia, and Lucy Ann aged 5 (see above).[5]

Old 300 Texas Families: Some sources state William Carr was part of the Moses and Stephen Austin 300 families (referred to as the Old 300) authorized by first the Spanish, then the Mexican, Governments to settle in what is now Texas. There are no original sources for this information. As stated in the Biography, Carr is known to have settled in an area markedly east of the eastern boundary of the Austin colony.
Nancy Lee Carr died in 1849 in Orange County, Texas. No record has been found of her burial site. It may have been on the Carr ranch.
More than one Ancestry.com tree shows a daughter named Sophia born in 1830 but there are no sources.
