"Hannah remains a somewhat mysterious figure, thanks to Tillinghast's reticence and her absence from vital records. She was probably, as Wayne G. Tillinghast has suggested to the author, the "Cozen Hanah Carr" who comes to visit in 1757. Samuel Tillinghast refers to his wife's brother James Carr, who lived on Jamestown, interchangeably as "brother James" (i.e., brother-in-law James) and "cozen James." Her mother was Mary Carr, widow, of Newport ("Record Book of the Second Baptist Church of Newport," Newport Historical Society Library [hereinafter NHSL], Ms. 1657, p. 233). Tillinghast's terms of relationship in the diary suggest that Hannah's father was the deceased Daniel Carr of Newport."
