Biography

Richard Carr was a witchcraft accuser in Salem Witch Trials

Discussing Sarah Mayer Haley Carr: "After six years of widowhood, she married, as his second wife, Capt. Richard Carr (George) of Amesbury and Salisbury on February 26, 1701/2"[1] The notation of "George" is such that it is indicating his father. Given this, and the names in Richard Carr's profile, I am proposing a merge of the two.

Records

Birth: CARR, Richard, s. Georg and Elisabeth, 2: 2m: 1659. [2]

Death: CARR, Richard, Capt., Sept. 11, 1727. NCTBK [3]

Salem Witch Trials

  • On 9 Sep 1692, along with Zerubbabel Endicott, he testified against Mary Bradbury, accusing her of exercising witchcraft thirteen years earlier by appearing as a "blue boar" and darting about the legs of George Carr's horse, causing it to stumble.[4]

Great Migration's article on Richard[2]'s father George[1] indicates that Dorothy Boyce was Richard[2]'s first wife and that their first child was born in Amesbury in 1686. A search on FamilySearch.org for 'Dorothy Boyse' finds births in Amesbury to Richard[2] & Dorothy:

Samuell Carr, son of Richard & Dorothy, born 16 Jun 1686 Dorothy Carr, dau of Richard & Dorothy, born 20 Jul 1688.

Four long-known children of Richard[2] born in Salisbury were: Elizabeth Carr, dau of Richard & Elizabeth, born 9 Jun 1691 Richard Carr, son of Richard & Dorothy, born, born 3 Jan 1693/4 James Carr, son of Richard & Sarah, born 30 Nov 1702 John Carr, son of Richard & Sarah, born Aug 1706

It is also long-known that a Richard Carr married a Dorothy Boyce in Killingworth, CT '10 Feb 1684', so either 10 Feb 1683/4 or 10 Feb 1684/5.

When Edson I Carr wrote in his book in 1894 he apparently did not know of the Amesbury births or of the Killingworth marriage. The 9 Jun 1691 birth record of Elizabeth Carr to Richard[2] & Elizabeth led Edson to assume an earlier wife named Elizabeth. That record apparently has the wrong mother (or, unlikely, records an out-of-wedlock child of Richard[2]).

The old 9 Jun 1691 record shows the mother's name in different handwriting from the rest of the record. I would guess the scribe didn't know the mother's name, and then later someone entered, in error, 'Elizabeth'.

If the information in The Carr Family Records is correct, and Richard married 4th Sarah Greely, it is possible that this is the Sarah Greely born April 4, 1703 parents are Jonathan Greely and Jane Walker.

I added two "matches" for Richard Carr that appear to be the same person. I am not initiating any merges as Richard is not researched by me, but was married to one of the Haley lines that I have studied.

At the least, Carr-1243 and Carr-664 are almost certainly the same person. It is less certain that Carr-599 is the same, but it seems likely.
