Ruth was the fourth of seven children born to Richard and Patience Carr. Her father was a shoemaker and also a letter carrier. She apparently lived in Frant until her marriage, either at home or as a servant (1851). The 1871 census shows her at Bethersden with Silas, and there her three children were born. After his death in 1872 (they were married for only four years) she moved to Tonbridge (1881& 1891) and Tunbridge Wells (1901). Probably some of her siblings were nearby. Brother Amos moved to Yorkshire, brother Thomas died at Tunbridge Wells 1878, but I have not checked where her sisters were.
