Biography

Andrew Jackson Carr was born April 2, 1826 in Cherry Creek, Chautauqua County, New York, USA to James Carr and Polly Brown. The month and year of his birth were listed on the 1900 US census, and may be more accurate than the other sources for his birth date, most of which are conflicting. [1]

The birth date on Andrew's tombstone, as pictured on his Findagrave memorial page, is likely not accurate. In 2017, a descendant of Andrew J. Carr stated in an email that years earlier he had commissioned a replacement stone to take the place of two small 4" X 4" markers for Andrew and Sarah's graves. The markers had only initials on them, and the descendant said that the information he had added to the new headstone was probably not entirely accurate. [2] [3]

Andrew Jackson ("A.J.") Carr can be found on the 1850 US Census for Cherry Creek, Chautauqua County, NY, with his wife Sarah and a 25-year old male named M. Melody, whose occupation is "Blacksmith". A. J.'s occupation is listed also listed as "Blacksmith". James Carr, his father, and Louisa Vinton, his sister are shown on the same page and previous page of the 1850 US census.

Andrew J. ("Jackson") Carr can be found on the 1857 Minnesota Territorial Census in Faribault, Rice County, Minnesota, at the age of 30, along with his wife and children. (Note, this census page shows each head of household and their respective household number off by one line, so that one member of each household appears to belong to the household above it. An examination (and probable "editorial" markings) make the error obvious.)

Andrew and his family can again be located on the 1880 US census for Smith Twp., Worth Co.,, Missouri. The FamilySearch.org website provides a transcription of the handwritten census data, and the names can be difficult to decipher. The daughter in law, "Syrepta" Carr could as easily be Syrefita or something similar, when one looks at the actual photocopy of the census. Andrew's and his son Edward's occupations are listed as "Blacksmith".
