Biography

Deborah was born in 1760. Hammond family history says her father was John Carr Jr of North Kingston RI. Family Search raises an ambiguity about whether her mother was Alice Gardiner or Mary Elizabeth Carr, maiden name unlisted. Both apparently came from England prior to marriage to her father. She herself is listed as possibly having a son by another man between the birth of her second and third child by Elnathan. That child, Benjamin Morgan, lived into adulthood, eventually died in Pike, Mississippi. If there is any truth in this, which seems unlikely, it might explain why the family moved far away to Vermont shortly after the child's birth. There Deborah lived to the age of 89, predeceasing her husband by seven years, he living to nearly 96 - an apparently happy enough marriage, ending in burial beside one another.
