Biography

John Kerr is a member of Clan Kerr.

John Kerr was the second son of Sir Andrew "Dand" Kerr (1470-1545) and his wife Janet Home. He was born around 1500[1] [2]

Before 1550, John Kerr had married Catherine Kerr, daughter of Andrew Kerr of Cessford.[3]

Direct lines can be traced through various peerage books of England and Scotland to Andrew Kerr, 9th Baron of Ferniehirst, Scotland. He was born in 1450, created Baron in 1480 and knighted in 1543 ... died in 1543. He and his son Andrew II, 7th Baron of Ferniehirst, were remarkable men for talent and undaunted courage, conspicuous in reigns of James IV and James V. ... His son Sir John Kerr did great service against the English and rescued Queen Mary from incursions by the English against the Scots. His son, Sir Thomas, the 11th baron, was devoted to Queen Mary's interests.[4]

Ferniehirst Castle

Ferniehirst Castle was originally built around 1490. In 1523, during Sir John's lifetime, it was thrown down and after being rebuilt was then besieged by the French in 1549.[5]
