Biography

Ann Carr was born in about 1822 to Patrick and Ann Carr. Her death record and the 1860 census say that she was born in Ireland. Other records say that she was born in Canada. (Primary sources are needed.)

She married Hugh Gray in 1847 in Roxbury, Massachusetts.[1]

In 1850 at age 24, she lived in Boston, Massachusetts with husband Hugh (age 25, a cooper); both of them are listed as having been born in Canada.[2]

In 1855 at age 29, she lived in Boston with husband Hugh (30, a cooper) and children James (age 5), Mary (listed as age 5, but really 3), and Annie (age 3). Both Hugh and Ann are listed as being born in Canada.[3]

In 1860 at age 34, she lived in Boston with her husband (age 33, a cooper) and children (James, 10, Anna, 8, Mary, 8, and Thomas, 2). This census says that Ann and Hugh were born in Ireland.[4]

She died of peritonitis in October 1860, at age 38, about ten days after giving birth to stillborn twins. She was buried in the Roman Catholic cemetery in Dorchester. At the time she lived at 82 5th Street, Boston. Her death record says that she and her parents (Patrick and Ann Carr) were born in Ireland.[5][6]

Research Notes

Ann's parents are recorded as Patrick and Ann on her death record in 1860. However, her husband Hugh's parents are recorded as Patrick Gray and Ann Brady on his 1898 death certificate. It's possible that in 1860 he gave his own parents' names for her death record by mistake.

Possible baptism record in Montréal, 1826, parents Patrick Carr, journalier (day laborer?) and Bridget Blansfield?[7]

Possible death record for Patrick Carr? Montréal 1853 [8]

Possible immigration record: Ship Columbus, arriving Boston July 1847 from Liverpool. Passengers Stephen Carr age 28 and Mary Ann Carr age 27.[9] Doesn't seem likely to be the right Ann, but worth investigating.
