Obituary

Julia L. McNiven, 78, of Simsbury, Connecticut, passed away on Sunday, October 16th at her home, which she shared with her loving husband of 59 years, the late Richard H. McNiven. Julia was born in Kingswood, England to the late renowned golden-age mystery writer, John Dickson Carr and Clarice Cleaves Carr.

After graduating from F.E. Bellows High School in Mamaroneck, New York, class of 1949, Julia went on to study at Wellesley College in Massachusetts. She later earned her undergraduate degree with highest honors in Medieval History from S.U.N.Y Purchase. Julia and her family resided in Mamaroneck for twenty three years. During this time she was active in the Mamaroneck United Methodist Church where she helped establish a Nursery School program. She also taught seventh grade Sunday school for 17 years, headed the youth fellowship program, and was a frequent lecturer for both adult Sunday school and church services.

In 1977, the family moved to Simsbury where she became an active member of the Simsbury United Methodist Church, teaching adult Bible classes and on occasion acting as a lay minister. In the 1980’s, she worked as a reporter/photographer for the Farmington Valley Herald. A golf enthusiast, Julia enjoyed playing with a local mixed league. She was an avid reader and well versed in theology and European history. Julia was also an accomplished cook specializing in French cuisine.

Her hobbies included travel, painting, crossword puzzles, playing guitar and piano, and writing poetry and short stories. One of her short stories was published in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine in 1974. She enjoyed spending time at her summer lake home in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Her love of the Irish-Setter dog breed was evident to all who knew her and her numerous Irish-Setters over the years. Julia is survived by her two sisters, Bonita (Carr) Cron, Bay of Islands, New Zealand and Mary (Carr) Howes of Oneonta, New York. She is also survived by four loving children: Lynn Centa (Robert) of Novelty, OH, Michelle Karol (Steven) of Boston, MA, Wooda Howard McNiven (Kerry) of Simsbury, CT and Russell McNiven-Grossman (Michael) of Tulsa, OK and eight grandchildren.
