Alice (Carragher) Comiskey (1887 - 1979)

Biography

Alice Carragher was born 6 May 1887 in Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan, the eleventh of twelve children, dau of Francis and Margaret (McArdle) Carragher. ^[1]

Mrs Margt Carragher 50 yrs, Lily 17 yrs, Annie 14 yrs, Alice, 10 yrs, Owen 8 yrs, passengers on S.S. Teutonic, from Liverpool 12 Oct, arrived at Ellis Island on 17 Oct 1898 to join daughter Miinnie Carragher, 333 W. 36th St, NYC. ^[2]

Alice Carragher became active in Irish associations, with her name frequently appearing in the city’s Irish newspapers. She and her sister, Lily, became founding members of the New York chapter of Cumann na mBan, for which she served as treasurer.

Alice Carragher, 24 yrs, dau of Francis and Margaret Carragher, married on 16 June 1912 in Manhattan, NYC to Harry Comiskey, 30 yrs, son of Patrick and Catherine (McCovey) Comiskey. ^[3]

Alice Comisky 29 yrs, widow, stenographer, sister Lillian Carragher, 38 yrs, waitress, resided in 1920 resided at 321 West 16th street, Manhattan, New York. ^[4]

In 1920 she and her sister agreed to a request to take the aging John Devoy into their home, where he lived until his death in 1928. She remained active on behalf of Ireland for the rest of her life, in organizing the Irish Race Convention in 1947 and running the American League for an Undivided Ireland in the 1950s.
