Biography

Mary Ann Whitehurst was born circa 1682, in Kemps Landing, Princess Anne, Virginia, a daughter of James Whitehurst 1674-1721 and Mary Godfrey, of Lower Norfolk, Virginia.
Mary married Thomas D. Carraway, born a son of John Carraway and Elizabeth Cannon. (See notes) Children of Mary and Thomas include:
  • William Caraway, born 1710, in Princess Anne county [1]
  • Nathaniel Carraway, born 1715, in Virginia, [2] married Mary Clayton and fathered nine children. He passed away after January 7, 1795, in New Bern, Craven county, North Carolina. [3]
  • Richard Carraway, born 1717, in Princess Anne, Virginia [4]
  • Thomas Carraway, born 1721, in Princess Anne, Viginia, died 1768 [5]
  • Amy Carraway, born 1723, in Princess Anne, Virginia [6]
  • Mary Carraway, born 1725, in Princess Anne, Virginia [7]
  • Elizabeth Carraway, born 1727, in Princess Ann county, died 1804, in Wayne county, North Carolina [8]
  • John Carraway, born 1731, in Prince Williams county, Virginia, died 1789, in New Bern, Craven county, North Carolina, married Margaret Stewart [9]

Mary Ann (Whitehurst) Carraway died before October 29, 1788 [10]

Research Notes

Note: Princess Anne county was established in 1691. A good map of the area of Kemps Landing, between Princess Anne and Norfolk counties is found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kemp%27s_Landing#/media/File:EasternVirginia1775.jpg

It is doubtful that Thomas' middle name is Jefferson. Children named after President Thomas Jefferson were born after the American Revolutionary War.

The Family of Thomas Carraway of Craven Co.

Thomas Carraway was born in 1689 in Princess Anne Co VA, the son of John and Ann Kemp Carraway. His father died in 1728; Thomas and his siblings, William and Diana (Horsington) moved to Craven Co. NC

It is reported that Thomas Carraway married Mary Whitehurst, perhaps the sister of John Whitehurst, who had married Thomas's sister. (I would love to see some authentication of this report.)

Princess Anne County (extinct) was named for Anne, daughter of James II, who became queen of England in 1702. The county was formed from Lower Norfolk County in 1691 and became extinct in 1963, after its consolidation with the city of Virginia Beach. The county seat was Princess Anne. See Virginia Beach.

A mother's birth date (Whitehurst-4 born 1682) should not be more than 67 years before the birth date of one of her children (Caraway-51 born 9 Apr 1771) ." That would be Nancy Ann Caraway.

Mary Ann Whitehurst, born 1709, daughter of James Whitehurst and Mary Godfrey married Thomas Carraway born 1704. Mary appears to be connected to the wrong Thomas, and the date of marriage for this profile indicates 1700, which is before either she or her husband were born.
