Biography

Francis was born on May 19th 1900 in Buffalo, Minnesota. He was the first of 9 children born to parents Joseph Carrier and Elizabeth (Bentler). Francis would also be know as Frank, or his nickname "Chub".

The 1900 US Census.[1] The young Carrier family of 3 was joined in the home by an extended family, causing the total to swell to 10. They spanned 3 generations, consisting of: Frank's father Joseph Carrier listed as the "head of household", Joe's wife Elizabeth, their infant son Frank, Joe's parents, 1 sister, a brother & sister-in-law, and 2 boarders.

In 1905, the Minnesota state census[2] was taken, and documented the Carrier family living in Maple Lake township, with Frank being the oldest of 3 children. His father Joe was farming, and Joe's parents (Frank's grandparents) were living in the home also.

The 1910 US census shows 10 year old Frank in the Carrier home in Warroad Minnesota, near the Canadian border.[3] In addition to his parents, Frank had 5 siblings in the home. His father Joe was working for the railroad.

The 1920 US census record for the Carrier family (with many spelling and transcription errors) shows 19 year old Francis (Frank) in a full house, living near the tiny town of Randall, in central Minnesota. Frank was done with school, and had a job doing farm labor.[4]

On July 22nd, 1924, Frank married Bernadine Margaret Katterhagen in Todd county, Minnesota.[5]

The young Carrier family was living in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, when the 1930 US census is taken.[6] 29 year old Frank was working as a truck driver, supporting wife Bernadine and 3 young daughters. They had a rented place, at $12 a month.

In 1931, Frank & Bernadine show up in the city directory for the St Cloud - Sauk Rapids area, at the same address is Frank's brother Lee and his wife Alice.

In August 1932, Frank moved his family from St Cloud to International Falls, where he went to work for the Minnesota & Ontario Paper Company.

Frank's wife Bernadine died on June 19th, 1939.

The 1940 US census shows Frank working at the paper mill while raising 4 daughters alone, having lost his wife the year before. The girls were 15 year old Lucille, Jeanette-13, Norma-10, and Patricia, 6 years old.[7]

In 1942, he registered for the draft.[8] 41 year old Frank reported that he's 5'5", 160 lbs, with blue eyes and gray hair.

He passed away on February 23rd 1948 in International Falls.[9][10]
