Biography

This profile is part of the Carrowreagh, Kiltimagh, Mayo One Place Study.

Patrick was born about 1794, likely in Killedan Parish, County Mayo to a Carroll family of farmers. The earliest civil record proving Patrick's life is an 1854 Irish Valuation Office Book, which documents his name as an 1842 lease holder in Carrowreagh Townland, along with four other Carrolls, Luke Mullaney, and Andrew Carr. Griffiths Valuation in 1856 listed the same group as joint tenants of two adjacent lots in Carrownageerah Townland.

Owen Carroll was the eldest member of these farming partners, and Patrick, six years younger, was the second eldest. Likely they were brothers, but definitive proof awaits discovery.

Patrick had at least one child, Catherine (Carroll) McDonough (abt.1836-1876), for whom he arranged a marriage in 1875, when she was forty years old. Her betrothed was Owen McDonagh, a widowed farmer ten years her senior with an eight-year-old daughter. His first wife had died in childbirth. Catherine died the following summer at the McDonagh farm in Shanaghy townland, north of Kiltimagh, having suffered a stroke.

It seems likely that one or more Carroll members of the original partnership were sons of Owen or Patrick, but early 19th century birth records for the area cannot be found in existing Killedan Catholic Parish records. There were no civil records in Ireland until 1864.

Patrick passed away in 1879 in Greyfield, the old village name for the portion of Carrowreagh that abutted Carrownageerah townland. Mary Carroll was present for his death, but her relationship to Patt was not documented. He was a widow and landholder, reported to be 95 year old.
