Biography

Martin was born about 1845 in Greyfield, a village area south of Kiltimagh, County Mayo in the townland of Carrowreagh. He was the son of Michael Carroll (abt.1803-1873) and Margaret (Walsh) Carroll (abt.1813-bef.1864). His parents were farmers. Martin and his brother John are the only children for whom documentation has been discovered. See the profile for Martin's father for the puzzle it has been to figure out his paternity.

Martin's birth father and the father listed in his marriage record are two different people, though likely to be closely related. Pat Carroll was the father of record in Martin's marriage license, cited below.

Catherine Ivers of Cartoon (or Cartron) Townland became Martin's wife in 1866. They had seven children. Eldest son Michael Carroll (1868-) died at nine months of age in 1869 from "delicacy," perhaps prematurity and/or fragile health since birth. Son Pat was born in 1873. Their five daughters were Mary, their eldest child, (born 1867), Bridget (1869), Margaret (1871), Catherine (1876), and Anne (1878).

At the 1901 Census for Carrowreagh, Catherine was a widow, 65 years old, with her youngest three daughters laboring on the farm. No death record for Martin has been discovered.
