Margaret was born in Feb 1842 in Dover, Kent. She was the daughter of Michael Carroll and Bridget Henry.
She was baptised at St Paul's Catholic church, Dover in February. Her godparents were John McCormick, almost certainly her father's fellow solider in the 2nd Rifle Brigade, and Margaret Dwyer (I think they wrote Dwyer instead of Wyer - her aunt.)
Her father was pensioned in August 1846, but he returned to Guernsey where he'd been stationed. In 1848 they went to her parents' native Ireland.
She came to Western Australia with her parents on the Pyrenees, arriving on 28 June 1851.[1]
Margaret married Charles Frederick Hatton on 6 July 1859 at St Patrick's Catholic church in Fremantle. He was a clerk in the Royal Engineers, and her father was a pensioner at North Fremantle. The witnesses were Mary Walsh and Colin Matheson (Royal Engineers).
They had William Andrews Hatton in April 1860 in Fremantle. He was baptised twice on the same day in May at St Patricks Catholic church and St John's Anglican in Fremantle. The godparents at the Catholic ceremony were Alice Ryan and William Andrews.
Her mother died in Dec 1860 and her father left West Australia for South Australia in April 1861.
Charles Frederick Hatton was born in Feb 1862 in Fremantle and only baptised at St Johns (possibly because the rift said to have happened with the Catholic priest over Bridget's burial?)
The couple departed Western Australia with their two children on the Lincelles on 27 April 1862, returning to England.
Lydia Jane was born in Brompton in 1864 and baptised at the Garrison church.
