Biography

Ellen Carroll was the mother of Australian Prime Minister Joe Lyons. She was the daughter of John and Catherine Carroll from Athy County Kildare. Catherine and her three daughters were sponsored migrants to Tasmania, and arrived there in 1857. Catherine was then 45, her daughters - Etty, 17; Mary, 14; and Ellen, 11

Ellen was married to Michael Henry Lyons on 7th September 1870 at Horton, Tasmania. [The locality known as Horton was later changed to Circular Head.]

The death occurred at Devonport on Saturday of Mrs. Ellen Lyons aged 66. She leaves a widower, four sons, and two daughters, one of the sons being the well-known Labour member for Wilmot in the House of Assembly (Mr. J.A. Lyons).
