Biography

Dempsey was born on 22 December 1762 in Duplin County, North Carolina, in that part of the county now called Sampson County. ^[1]

Dempsey Carroll married Mary Polly Kirtley (b. in 1783) 1799 in North Carolina.^[2]

Over the years he first moved to Sumter County, South Carolina, then directly to Wilcox County, Alabama. ^[3]

He passed away in 1841 in Wilcox County, Alabama.^[4]

Research Notes

There is a good deal of confusion and conflation with other unrelated Dempsey Carrolls that has occurred in this profile and elsewhere. I'll attempt to sort it out here.

First, this Dempsey Carroll was born in Duplin/Sampson Co., NC, and moved to South Carolina and then directly to Wilcox County, Alabama, according to his own sworn statement in regard to obtaining a pension for his Revolutionary War service.^[5]

He never lived in either Virginia or Kentucky as did another man named Dempsey Carroll from a Virginia Carroll family that has been shown via DNA testing to be completely unrelated to this Carroll family.
