Claude St John Carroll was born in 1880 in Queenstown, Cork, Ireland. [1] [2]He was the son of John Carroll and Anna Sophia Ferns knonw as 'Annie'. Claude had an older sister Caroline, named after their paternal grandmother and an older brother Wilfred Vivian (known as Vivian).
Claude moved with his family from Ireland to London in 1892 at the age of 12. His father established a stockbroking company, 'Carroll & Co' in London in 1894 and subsequently restored the O' to the family name later that year. The O' had been dropped in the early 1600's when the name was Anglicized during the English plantations.
Claude's mother Annie died in 1898 when Claude was 18. His father remarried a year later in 1899 and had 2 children with his second wife. Claude's half brother John Vivian (known as Jack) was born in London in 1900 [3]and his half sister Eileen Marguerite was born in London in 1903. [4]
Claude and his siblings had been raised in the Church of Ireland/England. His stepmother was French and Catholic. His half siblings were raised Catholic and spoke fluent French.
In the census of England and Wales 1901, Claude was working as a stock exchange clerk and boarding away from home. He had just turned 21 at the time. [5]
Claude met Edith Bywater-Ward while skiiing in Switzerland and they married in Oxfordshire in 1911. [6]He was 31 years old and she was 24.
In 1916, during the First World War, Claude joined the Royal Dublin Fusileers, at the age of 36. He fought in France and later served in the Royal Army Pay Corps. After the war he worked on the London Stock Exchange becoming a senior partner in his father's company, 'Carroll and Co'.
Claude and Edith had 3 sons, all born in Oxford. John Patrick was born in 1912 and died aged 5 months and seven days. [7] The burial record gave his address as 26 Denbigh Road, Ealing.Michael St John was born in 1914 and died tragically in 1968]]. [8]Charles Brian was born in 1917.
In the 1921 Census (taken on the night of 25 April 1921) Claude appears in the return for 6 Culmination Road, Ealing, Middlesex the address of his father and step-mother along with his half-siblings. His wife and two sons were living with their grandmother at 40 St.Giles Street, Oxford.
By 1925 Claude and his family were living at 4 Raymond Road, Wimbledon, Surrey.[9]Claude bought two building plots in West Wimbledon where he built his family home at 34 Drax Avenue, Wimbledon, S.W.20 in 1928.[10]
Claude travelled to Rhodesia and South Africa in 1947 - 1948 and visited his half brother Jack in Cape Town. He retired in 1959 at the age of 79 and he passed away in London in 1962 at the age of 82. [11]
