Joshua Carroll was born in County Cork, Ireland on 22nd May 1823 and baptised in Cork. He was the 3rd son of Thomas Corfield Carroll and Mary Hatton. The family moved to Leitrim St, Cork at the time of his birth.
Joshua's father Thomas Carroll was in partnership with his uncle Joshua Carroll and his grandfather John Carroll, and were import/export merchants and involved in ship building and ship brokerage.
Joshua's uncle Joshua Carroll died in 1831 and Joshua's father died just months later in 1832. Joshua's cousin John was an adult by then and his cousin Barcroft was 19. They formed a partnership and continued the shipping yard. Joshua was only 9 years old when his father died, and his brothers were also both minors.
His father's estate Carrollina on Gardiner's Hill, Montenotte was most likely held in trust for some years. Joshua's eldest brother John married their cousin Ann Hatton and died aged 27, without producing children. His brother Joseph Hatton Carroll became a land agent and managed the family properties in Cork. Joseph advertised Carollina in 1848 after changing the name to Carolina. It was sold and the name changed again to Ardnalee, but the house subsequently fell into ruin and was demolished. The land was later sold and developed into a housing estate named Ard na Laoi. Part of the original garden wall remains, encircling the estate. Adjoining land with 2 terrace houses on it must have been part of his uncle's estate, as it passed to Joshua's cousins John and Barcroft Haughton Carroll. His aunt, Sarah Carroll née Haughton lived there until her death in 1844. In 1852 his cousins were still the landlords of the terrace houses and they had let one of them.
