John was born about 1818 to Aaron and Cynthia Carroll in West Glenville, Schenectady, New York, one of twelve children.
He married Jane Abagail Schmidt probably around 1850; no record of their marriage has been found (nor of Jane's parentage). In the 1855 New York census, and in the 1860 US Census he is listed in the US Census still living in West Glenville, working as an innkeeper. Likely this was the Vedder hotel at Hoffman's Ferry, a Mohawk River crossing. The Utica-Schenectady Railroad, constructed in 1836, had a station there. He and Jane moved, with their six children, to Joliet, Illinois around 1861, where he worked as a carpenter.
John and Jane left New York and moved to Joliet, Illinois, in the early 1860s. All told they had nine children, and founded the "Joliet Carroll" family whose descendants now number in the many dozens, perhaps over 100.
John was listed in the 1870 US Census working as a carpenter. No record of his death has been found, but by the 1880 US Census he was no longer listed.
