Finding Mary's parents was a bit difficult. Mary was 92 when she passed away and though she was surrounded by relatives in the 1930 census, the person that reported on her death certificate did not know who her parents were and gave Mary's parents as William Carson of Ireland and an unknown mother. According to History of Howard and Chariton Counties, Missouri, Mary was the daughter of a James Carson of Glasgow, Missouri. There weren't any James Carsons to be found in Howard or Chariton counties, save for a railroad worker that seemed to be passing through. A Mary Carson can be found in the 1850 census in Chariton Township, a tiny town bordered by Howard County, in the house of Nehemiah Carson of Ireland. It has been assumed that this Mary was a daughter of Nehemiah and his wife Rachel, but due to the age of Rachel this is not possible. Nehemiah and Rachel had a son named James born in 1807 and who married a Mrs. Elizabeth Herron in Howard County in 1840. Family research has not shown when James or Elizabeth died. Therefore, the conclusion is that Mary is the daughter of James Carson and Elizabeth Herron and that something happened to James and Elizabeth leaving Mary in the care of her grandparents, Nehemiah and Rachel.
John R. Carson, the son of Nehemiah, did appear at the wedding of Rachel Perkins and John James Dinsmore. http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn88068010/1891-02-26/ed-1/seq-3/#words=Carson He resided in DeWitt, Missouri. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M3C9-YZV
This is probably her sister, Martha, whose death certificate actually states that she was the daughter of James Carson.
