Biography
Per the birth record of her son Robert, Helen was born in Chatham, Illinois.[1]
Per the death record of her daughter Dorothy, she was born in Alton.[2]
The birth record of another son says Chatham.
She married "H. Jay Betts" on 27 May 1909 in Chicago, Illinois.[3]
In the 1920 census, living with Helen and Henry is one Jane Atkinson, identified as “mother-in-law” (to Henry) -- i.e., Helen’s mother. Helen’s grand-daughter, Kim Betts Doyle, indicates that Helen’s maiden name was Carson (and this is supported by multiple records, including at least two death records of her children); therefore if Jane is Helen’s mom, Atkinson must be a subsequent married name or a maiden name returned to.
SSDI has a Helen Betts, b 2 Aug 1891, d Jun 1965 Cook Co., IL.
There is a Helen A Betts (1891-1966) buried in Elm Lawn Memorial Park, same cemetery as her husband; the cemetery marker includes both their names together.[4]
Children
Dorothy, b 10 Apr 1910.[5][6]Descendant of Henry J Betts, Kim Betts Doyle, wrote (to Jillaine Smith) that Dorothy got pregnant out of wedlock, was disowned, and may have commit suicide in Chicago. We do find a birth record for Richard Arthur Heine, b 24 Jul 1928 in Chicago, son of Arthur Heine (b 1908) and Dorothy Betts (b 1910).[7] This family unit (Arthur, Dorothy and Richard Heine, and Arthur's mother, Mary J Heine) is living in Chicago in 1940.[8] That Dorothy who married Arthur Heine was daughter of Henry and Helen is supported by Dorothy's death record which names her parents. Dorothy died 14 Jan 1946 in Chicago; she is buried at Acadia Park Cemetery in Norwood, Cook, Illinois.[6]
Henry J. Jr, b abt 1913; SSDI has a Henry Betts b. 11 May 1912, d. Dec 1973; last residence not specified; SS issued Illinois. Niece Kimberly Betts Doyle indicates that he remained single, was a “huge” man, lived in Milwaukee. She believes he died of heart [attack] or stroke sometimes in the 1960s.
