Note N65Granddaughter, Helen Maass Wolff later said " Rosa was never the same after the San Francisco fire of 1906 when she lost her sons." I have not been able to find out any more about the statement. Aunt Helen also said they brought some sons with them from Germany. That is still a mystery since they were married in Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1900 census Rosa states she had 11 children, 6 living at that time. By 1910 census she states to have had 11 children with 5 living in 1910. Adolph died 15 Nov 1908. More mysteries to unravel. 1

In 1900 the family lived at 1018 Pacific Street in San Francisco. As told by Grandma Thomas (AKA Dora Werner, Mrs. August Henry Maass), she said, " Mother (Helena) never fully recovered after she lost three sons in the fire and earthquake of 1906. She was never the same after that. The family lived in the heart of San Francisco. In fact their grocery store was at 2200 Powell Street.". 1

The quake was between 7.7 and 7.9 on the Richter Scale. The next great earthquake expected in San Francisco in 2032.
