Biography

Ensign Jacob Carter served under the command of Colonel Joseph Glover Glover-5571 in the Regiment of Foot and appears on his roster submitted September 22, 1775. [1] [2] A copy of this roster may be viewed here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSFF-LFTF?cc=2546162&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3A7JVS-W6N2

Jacob Carter, Jr. was born circa 1739, at "Carter's Ford" in Colleton, South Carolina [3] Jacob married Elizabeth Warren, baptized on February 23, 1739, in Staffordshire, England, a daughter of John Warren and Elizabeth Palmer, married September 11, 1738. Elizabeth was married first to John Galloway and had three children by her first marriage. Jacob and Elizabeth became the parents of at least three additional children, Rachel, Isaac and David Carter. [4]

Colleton County was one of three original counties organized in the English Province of Carolina in 1682. However, Colleton was divided into three parishes by 1730 (St. Bartholomew’s, St. Paul’s, and St. John’s Colleton), which took over most county responsibilities, including oversight of elections. Lying south and west of Charleston between the Stono and Combahee Rivers, the first-manifestation Colleton was somewhat larger than its current counterpart. [5] After two previous incarnations, the current Colleton County was created in 1800. [6]

The earliest records of Jacob Carter in Province of Carolina are two land grants from King George III of Great Britain. The first was granted on the 13th day of May, 1768. This was a tract of 250 acres in Colleton County bounded on all sides by vacant land. The survey on this tract was dated 6th of April, 1768. A second grant from George III, was dated the 26th day of July, 1774. This 200 acres in Colleton County was on the waters of Saltcatchers bounding Northwest on John North and the other sides on vacant land. The survey for this tract was dated April 30, 1773. This portion of the Province became South Carolina, in 1776. Research Notes

5 Aug 1775 - Ensign Jacob Carter served in the Lower Salt Catchers company of the Colleton County (SC) Regiment of Foot under Colonel Joseph (or Joshua) Glover: Photocopy of page from book (Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers For SC?) attached to Jacob Carter (1720-1815) by c11roe in her Lightsey, Andrews, Walker tree at Ancestry.com. Note: Jacob Carter, Sr. (1720-1815) would have been too old to have served as an Ensign because Ensign was the lowest of commissioned officer ranks and as such, Ensigns were in their late teens or early 20's. Obviously, it was Jacob Carter, Jr. who was the Ensign.

  • George Carter conveyed by deed 242 acres (more or less) to Jacob Carter. This land was originally granted to George Carter on 3 Aug 1789 by His Excellency Charles Pinckney, Esquire, as mentioned in the text of deed dated 30 Jan 1809.
