British politician and barrister. He was the son of Sir John Carter, Mayor of Portsmouth, knighted by King George III, (son of John Carter, who was a merchant). He changed his name to Bonham Carter in 1827 after inheriting his cousin's estates.
Justice of Peace and Deputy Lieutenant, he was High Sheriff of Hampshire in 1829 and Whig Member of Parliament (MP) for Portsmouth from 1816 to 1838.
In 1826 in the absence of any heirs in the Bonham family, he inherited an estate of several thousand acres around Buriton, Petersfield and West Meon. On 17 February 1827 he changed his name by Royal License to John Bonham Carter to testify his “esteem and regard” for his late cousin, Thomas Bonham. And thus we move into the Bonham Carter dynasty.

On 25 December 1816 he married Joanna Maria Smith, daughter of William Smith. They had several children and were the founders of the Bonham Carter dynasty in Britain.
