Biography

John Carter was the son of Edward Carter and Elizabeth Gray. His parents moved to North Carolina from Isle of Wight County, Virginia

Research Notes

This information is taken directly from the website, "Richard White's Confederate Kin" and is written by Richard White: 'Information that I have received that is supposed to be from a history of Craven County, North Carolina, but which has not been verified by me [Richard White], indicates that James M. Carter's [and his brother Henry C. Carter's] direct ancestor, Edward Carter, moved to North Carolina from Isle of Wight County, Virginia, after taking part in a rent rebellion against the royal governor. John Carter's great grandson, Herring Carter, Carter-33463 moved to Leon County, Florida, for awhile around 1840, and then to Thomas County, Georgia. Herring Carter's sons, William P. Carter, Henry C. Carter, Morris Carter, and James M. Carter served in various Confederate military units from Georgia and Florida. Only Henry C. Carter survived this service.

Disputed children include:

Keziah Carter, born August 8, 1741, died November 11, 1791, wife of Richard Blizzard 1731-1782: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/167202645/richard-blizzard

Hezekiah Blizzard, son of Richard Blizzard and Keziah Carter, married Leah Carter, Carter-27585 daughter of Solomon Carter and wife, Constantina and grand-daughter of John.

Are we sure about his wife? Rebecca Arabella (Unknown) is usually shown in genealogies as the wife of Sheriff John Carter. Also, shouldn't we change this person's name from "John" to "Unknown"?

Carter-4689 and Carter-3764 appear to represent the same person because: same spouse

Carter-12915 and Carter-4689 do not represent the same person because: The proposed "John Carter" is not a descendant of Paul Carter, as well documented by Paul Heinegg.

Six direct male line descendants of Solomon Carter of Point of View Plantations carry an African Y chromosome (though they present as European). The 1800 US Census enumerates all the family as "All other free persons, except Indians not taxed" (in other words, they were not enumerated as "white.) Solomon's pedigree to Paul Carter has been well documented by Paul Heinegg. The conflation of these ascendant lines for Solomon Carter appears to be the existence of same named Carters in close proximity in place and time. There should be no merge.

The 1790 census lists Solomon Carter (along with one other male over sixteen, four males under sixteen, and six females) as free whites. Six free nonwhites are also listed. I've attached an image of the census (typed transcript) to his page. The name and details appear on page two.

I am familiar with all their census records. That just means they successfully "passed" in the 1790 census, but not the 1800 or 1820. DNA doesn't lie.

Thank you. I was just trying to clarify the controversy for anyone else interested in or descended from Solomon Carter, my fifth great-grandfather.

Solomon's son Alexander's (of Point of View Plantation) 1820 census counts no free white persons, 5 free colored persons, and 7 slaves. There are only 4 households on the page with no free white. (Unfortunately the Point of View non-profit folded last year.)

Carter-12915 and Carter-4689 appear to represent the same person because: Father of John Carter, who is the father of Solomon and Thomasina.

Here is an interesting blog that discusses the descendants of Thomas Carter and Magdalen Moore: https://sallysfamilyplace.com/maple-lawn/thomas-carter-magdalen-moore/

It shows a portrait of Thomas Carter that hangs in the headquarters of the Duplin county, North Carolina Historical Society.

The picture is followed by a lot of comments by possible descendants who share their DNA results.
