Herbert Sullivan Carter was born in Woodvile, Manawatū, on 27 Sep 1890, the ninth child of Lambton Carter and Mary Catherine Sullivan.
Herbert, a farm hand at the time[1], married Isabella Bruce Thomson on 11 Dec 1911 in Palmerston North.
Their first daughter, Ella Mary Katherine, was born in Wanganui in 1912. She died in New Plymouth on 18 Feb 1913.
Their second daughter, Winifred Frances was born in Te Kauwhata, Waikato on 24 Mar 1914.
Their third daughter, Emily was born in Stratford, Taranaki on 4 Sep 1915.
He enlisted on 6 Apr 1916, and embarked for Europe on 26 Jul 1916.
He was killed in action at Messines Ridge, Ypres, on 31 Jul 1917. He is buried at the Messines Ridge Memorial in Belgium.
