Elijah Carter was a Civil Servant in the American Revolution.

ELIJAH CARTER, b. at Lunenburg, 26 Feb 1742/3[1] son of Thomas Carter and Betty Sawyer; Elijah d. at Fitchburg, 19 Dec 1813;[2] m. at Lunenburg, 18 Jan 1770,[3] JANE GOODRIDGE, b. at Lunenburg, 7 Jul 1747[4] daughter of Philip and Jane (Boynton) Goodridge.

Elijah Carter was a farmer in Fitchburg. He served as selectman and assessor of Fitchburg in 1776, 1778, and 1779.[5] Elijah conveyed his farm to his sons Elisha and Joseph in 1813. On 7 March 1813 (recorded 23 December 1813), Elijah Carter sold to Elisha Carter thirty-two acres in Fitchburg for payment of five hundred dollars. On 6 April 1813 (recorded 23 December 1813), Elijah Carter, yeoman of Fitchburg, in consideration of $1,200 conveyed to Elisha Carter, yeoman of Fitchburg, a farm in Fitchburg of seventy-seven acres and fifty-three rods with the buildings. On 7 March 1813, Elijah conveyed to Joseph a tract of seventy-two acres for $1,000.[6]

Elijah’s estate entered probate 4 January 1814 with Elisha Carter as administrator. Real estate consisted of the northwesterly part of a house with land in Fitchburg valued at $30 and personal estate of $493.88 most of that in livestock.[7]

On 18 June 1814 (recorded 23 June 1814), Elijah Carter and James Carter, yeomen of Fitchburg, in consideration of $350, sold to Asa Perry, gentleman of Fitchburg, thirty acres of a farm partly bounded by the dwelling house of the late Elijah Carter. On 6 April 1816, Joseph Carter of Fitchburg with his wife Betsy relinquishing right of dower, in consideration of $1,250, conveyed to Elisha Carter, yeoman of Fitchburg, a tract of seventy-two acres.[8]

Jane Goodrich and Elijah Carter were parents of twelve children born at Fitchburg.[9]
