Nickolas Gene "Nick" Carter (born January 28, 1980)[1] is an American singer. He is best known as a member of the pop group the Backstreet Boys. As of 2014 Carter has released two solo albums, Now Or Never and I'm Taking Off during breaks between Backstreet Boys schedules. He has made occasional television appearances and starred in his own reality shows, House of Carters and I (Heart) Nick Carter. He gained fame in the mid 1990s and early 2000s as a teen idol. He is also the older brother of singer Aaron Carter.

Biography

Nick was born in Jamestown, New York to Jane Spaulding and Robert Carter. He is the oldest of five children. His younger siblings are: Aaron Carter, Leslie Carter, Angel Carter, and Bobbie Jean Carter. He has an older sister, Ginger Carter, from his father's first marriage and a younger brother, Kaden Carter, from his father's third marriage. Carter's parent's divorced in 2003 and his father passed away in 2017.[1]

Career

Early Years

Nick began his acting and singing career when he was about 10 years old. His mother enrolled him in voice and dance lessons. His dance lessons were at the Karl and DiMarco's School of Theater and Dance and consisted of ballet and tap.[1]

He appeared in several commercials including the Florida State Lottery and The Money Store. He also did an educational video called "Reach For the Book", a show called "The Klub" and performing at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers home games for two years. He had an appearance in the 1990 Johnny Depp film Edward Scissorhands as a child playing on a Slip 'N Slide.[1]

One of his dance teachers placed him in his first group called "Nick and the Angels". Between 1989 to 1993, Nick covered various number of popular songs by other artists. These recordings ended up on an unofficial release called Before the Backstreet Boys 1989-1993 by Dynamic Discs that was released in October 2002.[1]

He put in a winning performance on the 1992 New Original Amateur Hour at age 12. At 11, Nick had auditioned for Disney's The Mickey Mouse Club and the Backstreet Boys. His mother wanted him to choose MMC so he could stay in school. Nick chose the Backstreet Boys instead and MMC was cancelled a few years later. He obtained a personal tutor while on tour.[1]

Backstreet Boys

It was revealed during many interviews that Nick met AJ McLean and Howie Dorough during several auditions that the boys went to. On April 20, 1993, Nick Carter became the youngest Backstreet Boy at the age of 13. The group consisted of AJ McLean, Howie Dorough, and cousins Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson.

The Backstreet Boys have recorded eight studio albums, 28 singles, one live album, three compilations and 25 music videos. The first single, We've Got It Goin' On debuted in 1995. Their most successful album to date is Millennium with songs such as "I Want It That Way", "Larger Than Life", "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely", and "The One".[2]

The group is often referred to as BSB and have teamed up with the popular 1980's boy group, New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) to form NKOTBSB.

Solo

When the group decided to leave their management company, The Firm, in 2002; Nick chose to remain with them to manage his solo career. As the group began recording their new album without him, he started working on his first solo album. Now or Never was released on October 29, 2002 and reached No. 17 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified gold in both the United States and Canada. The lead single, "Help Me" achieved considerable success while "I Got You" was a minor hit in Europe.[1]

Nick was No. 9 in People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" in 2000 and Cosmogirl magazine's "Sexiest Man in the World". Nick began work on his second solo album in 2003 but the recordings were aborted when the Backstreet Boys returned to the studio. One of the tracks was used as the theme song to the television series House of Carters in 2006. "Let it Go" was written by Nick Carter, Matthew Gerrard, and Bridget Louise Benenate.[1]

Nick recorded a duet with pop singer Jennifer Paige called "Beautiful Lie" in 2009. In 2010, Nick started recording new songs for his second solo album. The album, I'm Taking Off, was released on February 2, 2011 in Japan, June 3, 2011 in Germany, and on May 24, 2011 in the US via iTunes.[1]

In 2014, Nick joined up for a duet album with Jordan Knight of New Kids on the Block fame. The album was titled Nick and Knight and debuted at No. 24 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 14 in Canada. The tour ran from September to November of 2014.[1][3]

His third album, All American, was released on November 25, 2015. The single "I Will Wait" was released on Vevo.[1]

Acting

In October 2014, Nick starred as local bully Brody in the ABC Family Halloween special, The Hallow, opposite Kevin Zegers.[1]

He starred with his siblings in the reality television show House of Carters which premiered on October 2, 2006.[1]

He made two appearances on the TV show 8 Simple Rules and also appeared on American Dreams. In 2007, Nick filmed the independent movie Kill Speed with Brandon Quinn, Andrew Keegan, Natalia Cigliuti, Greg Grunberg, and Reno Wilson. He appeared in 90210 in 2012.[1]

Nick, along with his band mates, made his motion picture debut in 2013 in This Is the End. In 2014, he and his then fiancee, Lauren Kitt, starred in their own VH1 reality show I Heart Nick Carter.[1]

At Comic-Con 2015, Nick revealed his plans to film a movie that he had written. Entitled Dead 7, the film focuses on a ragtag band of gunslingers. The film stars Lauren Kitt Carter, Howie Dorough, AJ McLean, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, Erik-Michael Estrada, Jacob Underwood, Trevor Penick, and Jeff Timmons. The film was shown on the Sci Fi channel April 2016.[1]

Nick paired up with Sharna Burgess on the 21st season of Dancing with the Stars. He made the finals however took second place to Bindi Irwin and Derek Hough.[1][4][5]

Personal

Nick proposed to his long term girlfriend, Lauren Kitt, on February 23, 2013. Lauren is a fitness trainer that he met through his brother and sister in the Florida Keys. They were married on April 12, 2014 in Santa Barbara, California.[1][6]

In 2012, Nick's sister Leslie died from an accidental drug overdose. Nick's family blamed Nick. Nick did not attend his sister's funeral due to this feud.[1]

In April 2016, Nick and Lauren greeted their first child, Odin Carter.[1][7]

On January 13, 2016, Nick was arrested in Key West, Florida and booked for misdemeanor battery after he was denied entry to a bar due to high levels of intoxication.[1][8]

Health

Nick as acknowledged ongoing struggles with drugs and alcohol abuse. He revealed that he started drinking when he was two years old. He says that he became sober after being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and realized that he could die if he did not make major lifestyle changes. The singer credits fellow BSB member, Kevin Richardson, for helping him turn his life around by giving him Norman Vincent Peale's book Why Some Positive Thinkers Get Powerful Results.[1]

On February 19, 2009, Nick appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to speak about his past with addictions.[1]

In 2013, Nick published his first book titled Facing the Music and Living to Talk About It.[1]
