Biography

The date of Edward's birth is not known. He was presumably born after the 14 June 1751 marriage of his parents.[1]

Note: During his father's lifetime he was sometimes given the suffix Junr. or Jr. to distinguish him from his father. After his father's death he was simply called Edward Carter.

Tax Lists and Parents' Probate Records

A 1782 tax list in Lancaster County shows him in the household of his father Edward Carter (Sr.).[2]

Edward's father Edward Carter's will was probated in 1784.[3] The will includes Edward (Jr.), his siblings Martin and Hannah, and the daughters of his deceased sister Lucy.

The 1785 distribution of Edward Carter's estate is pictured here.[4] The distribution from Edward Carter (Sr.) to Edward Carter (Jr.) included six enslaved individuals: James, Dinah, Will, George, Rose and child. These names are important in establishing a continuity of the identity of this Edward Carter.

A 1785 tax list in Lancaster County shows Edward Carter as the head of his own household.[5] His widowed mother and his brother Martin Carter were listed as heads of separate households. Edward's taxable household included four enslaved adults (James, Daniel, Rose, Dinah) and six enslaved children (James, Will, George, Betty, Peter, Dinah).

The 1786 tax list shows Edward Carter as the head of his own household.[6] His taxable household included five enslaved adults (James, Daniel, Rose, Dinah and another) and six enslaved children (James, Willy, George, Betty, Peter, Dinah).

The 1787 tax list shows Edward Carter as the head of his own household and shows that adult white male James Carter was also in his household. [7]

Edward's mother Catherine Carter's will was probated 29 April 1788.[8] The will bequeathed an enslaved boy named Jack. Edward also inherited Catherine's land and other items.

The 1788 and 1790 tax lists show Edward Carter as the head of his own household. [9][10]

Land Tax Lists

Lancaster County tax lists show the sequence of the ownership of 315 taxable acres of land. The sequence shows the property first owned by Edward Carter being inherited by his wife Catherine Carter after Edward's death, and then inherited by Edward Carter, Jr., after Catherine's death. After the death Edward Carter, Jr., apparently in 1792, the property is listed as "Edward Carter's Estate."

A land tax list in 1782 shows Edward Carter and a quantity of 315 acres.[11]

Land tax lists in 1787 and 1788 show Catherine Carter and a quantity of 315 acres.[12][13]

Land tax lists in 1789 and 1791 show Edward Carter and a quantity of 315 acres.[14][15]

Land tax lists in 1792, 1793, 1794 and 1795 show Edward Carter's Estate and a quantity of 315 acres.[16][17][18][19]

Marriage Records

A record in Lancaster County indicates the marriage of Edward Carter and Sally White on 16 February 1786, the same day that Martin Carter married Milly Dunaway.[20] Probably this is the same Edward Carter and his brother Martin Carter, but no evidence confirms this.

Another Lancaster County record indicates the marriage of Edward Carter and Judith Lunceford on 21 May 1790.[21] This appears to be the same Edward Carter as a portion of his land in 1792 went to "Judith Carter relict of Edward Carter deceased." See below.

Division of Land

A record among Lancaster County deeds dated 26 September 1792, shows the division of the "land of Mr. Edward Carter deceased" into three parts.[22] The sum of the three parts is 340 acres lying on the western branch of the Corrotoman River. One part went to his widow Judith Carter. One part went to Molly Carter. One part went to Thomas Carter.

This deed also stipulates that Edward Carter's six enslaved persons were to be divided among his heirs. Dinah and Peter went to Judith Carter. Rose and George went to Molly Carter. Daniel and Betty went to Thomas Carter.

As the deed mentions guardians, presumably Molly Carter and Thomas Carter were Edward's young children, but because Edward might have first married Sally White in 1786, it is not clear who would have been their mother(s).

Appraisement of Estate

An estate appraisement dated 20 July 1795 called "Memorandum of the appraisement of the estate of Edward Carter" appears in Lancaster County records.[23][24] The appraisal names six enslaved individuals: Daniel, Rose, Dinah, George, Bett, Peter. These names make it clear that this is the same Edward Carter that was recorded in his father's 1785 distribution and in the 1785 and 1786 tax lists.

Guardianship of Infant Children

In the Lancaster County records there was a bond recorded for Judith Carter and Peter Beane for the guardianship of Thomas Carter, "infant orphan of Edward Carter deceased" on 18 September 1792. [25] There was also a bond issued for Peter Beane, John Beane and Wm. George Jr. for the guardianship of Mary Carter, "infant orphan of Edward Carter deceased" on 18 September 1792.[26] Note that in this bond she is called Mary, but was called Molly in the division of her father's land (see above).

The Descendants of Capt. Thomas Carter of "Barford"

The descendants of Capt. Thomas Carter of "Barford", Lancaster County, Virginia, 1652-1912, written by James Lyon Miller and published in 1912, has a two-page entry devoted to Edward's father and his family.[27] The entry speculates that Edward might have married Sally White, but has no further information about him.

Early Settlers of Tidewater Virginia

Early Settlers of Tidewater Virginia, Volume 4, written by Elise Greenup Jourdan, 2009, also has a brief summary of records relating to Edward Carter (Sr.) and his family.[28] In the entry, the author speculates that the 1795 probate record belongs to the Edward Carter of this entry. The above records in this WikiTree entry support the same conclusion.
