Mary Magdalene Carter was born on November 3, 1872 in Sparta, White, Tennessee, United States, daughter of William Jackson Carter (1840–1891) and Rebecca Wood (1853–1918).

In the 1880 census Mary (age 7) was the daughter of Jackson Carter in District 8, Grainger, Tennessee, United States.[1] Jackson Carter 36, wife Rebecca Carter 28, daughter Julia Carter 14, daughter Syntha Carter 12, son John W. Carter 11, son James M. Carter 9, daughter Mary M. Carter 7, daughter Attie C. Carter 6, daughter Martha C. Carter 4, son Francis M. Carter 9 months.

In the 1900 census Mary (age 24) was the single daughter of Rebecca Carter in Civil District 6, White, Tennessee, United States.[2] Rebecca Carter 49, son James M Carter 27, granddaughter Mary L Carter 8, daughter Mary M Carter 24, son Andrew R Carter 18, son Samuel Carter 16, daughter Amanda E Carter 13, son Robert F Carter 9, grandchild William L Carter 7, grandchild Thomas Carter 2.

In the 1920 census Mary (age 47) was the widowed head of household in Civil District 6, White, Tennessee, United States.[3] Mary M Carter 47, daughter Valley M Carter 17, son Richard Carter 14, daughter Bocina Carter 12.

In the 1930 census Mag (age 57) was the single mother of William L Carter in District 07, White, Tennessee, United States.[4] William L Carter 38, wife Hattie Carter 28, son Willie Carter 13, son Argo Carter 11, son Elmore Carter 9, son Jessie F Carter 7, son Loyd Carter 6, daughter Fannie G Carter 2, son J W Carter 0, mother Mag Carter 57.

Mary died on January 3, 1956 in Sparta, aged 83. She was buried in Carter Cemetery, White County, Tennessee.[5][6]
