Mary Cary Ambler Carter Carver, 70, died June 8, 1999, at her home in Virginia Beach. She was predeceased by her husband, Capt. Edward S. Carver, U.S. Navy, and her parents, Adm. Worrall Reed Carter and Mary Willcox Carter.
Known by family and friends alike as Big Ma, she will long be remembered by them for her selfless generosity and warmth of spirit.
Mrs. Carver, a native of Norfolk, is survived by her brother, Worrall Reed Carter Jr. of Suffolk, and by eight children and 18 grandchildren, including her daughter, Winship C. Tower and her husband, Guy K. Tower, of Virginia Beach, and their children, King F. Tower, Jane E. Tower, Jeremiah A. Denton IV and Edward C. Denton; her daughter, Jane C. Paulus and her husband, P. Steven Paulus, of Staunton, and their children, Benjamin D. Paulus, Anne H. Paulus and Thomas B. Paulus; her daughter, Polly C. Vaughan and her husband, William J. Vaughan Jr., of Virginia Beach, and their children, Cary W. Vaughan, Katherine C. Vaughan and Mary W. Vaughan; her daughter, Anne Tudor Carver and her husband, Justin R. Ward, of Alexandria, and their children, Mary Cary A. Ward, Charles S. Ward and Katherine R. Ward; her daughter, Susan C. Nixon and her husband, Richard R. Nixon Jr., of Norfolk, and their children, Ellen R. Nixon, John P. Nixon and Julia W. Nixon; her son, Edward S. Carver Jr. of Virginia Beach and his son, Edward S. Carver III; her son, Charles J. Carver of Wilmington, N.C.; and her daughter, Ellen C. Burlingame and her husband, Robert A. Burlingame, of Virginia Beach, and their daughter, Rebecca A. Burlingame.
After raising her children, Mrs. Carver, a noted antique and collectibles expert, founded and operated for many years Settler Sales Inc., an antique and estate sale dealer and agency doing business primarily in Virginia and Maine.
Mrs. Carver was a member of Galilee Episcopal Church, the Junior League of Norfolk, the Colonial Dames of America and the Princess Anne Country Club. She was a graduate of the National Cathedral School in the District of Columbia and attended Maryland College for Women.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Galilee Episcopal Church, 40th Street and Pacific Ave., Virginia Beach, with burial at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, friends make memorial donations to the Mary Cary Carver Scholarship Fund at Norfolk Academy, 1585 Wesleyan Drive, Norfolk, VA 23502; Judeo-Christian Outreach Center, P.O. Box 831, Virginia Beach, VA 23451; or United Sclera Derma Foundation, P.O. Box 399, Watsonville, CA 95077. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
