Thomas Hepworth [Mary's father] was buried in Charleston 13 May 1728. He was survived by his wife, Anne, and five children: Anne (m. John Barksdale), Elizabeth (m. James Kilpatrick), Mary (m. Robert Nesbit & Thomas Carter), Sophia [m. Joshua Toomer], and Thomas.[1]
First, Mary Hepworth and Robert Nesbit were married in February 1730 in St Philip's Parish, Charles Town, South Carolina.[2]
With some citation notations, the following related website, Thomas Carter of Liberty County, provides an informative history of land transactions of Mary's second husband. Among the timeline entries that have not been independently verified are that Mary Hepworth was the widow of Robert Nesbit, daughter of Thomas Hepworth and Ann Rawlins.
Thomas Carter married Mary Hepworth. She is named in his will as Mary Carter.[3] It would be unusual for their son Hepworth Carter to have the forename that he does had his mother not been Mary Hepworth. Since Mary was alive at the time of the will, her birth date is adjusted accordingly.
Mary Hepworth was born in Charleston, South Carolina, a daughter of Thomas Hepworth and Anne Rawlins. Thomas was Recorder of the City of Charleston, in 1723, and was Chief Justice of the Province of South Carolina. [4]
The home that Mary grew up in is the oldest house in Beaufort County, and listed on the National Historic Register. Photographs of the home are readily available online, and a write up is found here: https://www.cityofbeaufort.org/DocumentCenter/View/610/Hepworth-Pringle-House-Historic-Sites-Survey-1997-PDF
