Biography

According to his Revolutionary pension application (s1649), Charles Carter was born in 1762 in Powhatan County Va, which did not exist at that time. His brother Poval, also born that year, correctly stated he was born "in that portion of Cumberland County that was taken off and made into Powhatan County Va".

In 1779, at the age of 17, Charles Carter entered the service of the United States Army. Under Capt. Edward Mumford, he marched north to Hampton to prevent the British from landing on the American Side. He was later wounded in the left wrist at the opening of the battle of Camden in South Carolina, also serving in the battle of Gilford Courthouse in 1781. Later he served in the Calvery under Littleberry Mosby, and was in battle at Jamestown and Petersburg. He was discharged after serving at the Siege of York Oct. 1781.

Charles married Susannah Wright in 1789, the daughter of Thomas Wright of Cumberland Co. After the war he lived in Powhatan Co., Va. Then, in about 1806, he moved first to Knox Co., Tenn, and then to Jefferson County, Tennessee. His wife dying there about 1820.

Charles then moved to McMinn County with sons William, Josiah, and daughter, Susannah Lowery. His other 2 sons, Charles Carter Jr. and Samuel Carter, moved to Bibb County Alabama by 1821. His daughter Nancy P. McSpadden married in Jefferson Co., Tenn in 1809, moving first to Mississippi and then to Bibb County, Alabama near her brothers.
