In 1860, 15-year-old Thomas Carter lives on his grandfather's farm with his sister Harriet and two maiden Aunts, Martha and "Biddy. Thomas J. would have been about 18 at the time the Civil War began. He may be one of the several men with same name who served in the CSA. One survived until 1897 when he applied for a indigent's pension in Hall County. "In 1900, a Thomas J. Carter, born April 1845 in Georgia, lives in Alabama: Thomas is 54, married to Sarah, age 49, with 5 children, ages 31 to 8. (The couple reports they have been married 18 years; Thomas' oldest daughter, Viola, would have been born to a first marriage. The Thomas J. Carter buried in Athens, ALA (born 1840) may be closer match. He served in the CSA; wife was Ellen Alice and they had 5 children. See findagrave #27771230
