J. L. (JAY) Carter, age 83, of Alma died Wednesday afternoon October 7th at the Bacon County Hospital after an extended illness. He was a native of Bacon County, son of the late George F. Carter and Mattie Mae Carter and was also preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Tuten Carter, a son, Jimmy Carter, a daughter, Virginia Powell, five brothers, Eugene, Alvin, Marvin, James (Pete) and Walter Carter, three sisters, Geneva Carter, Pauline Padilla, Ruby Nell Carter, two grandchildren, Dennis and Christopher Powell. Jay was a veteran of WW II serving in the U S Army. Survivors include a son, Vernon Carter of Waycross, three grandchildren, Michael Nelson Powell of Florida, Daniel Lee Carter and Kelvin (Jim) Carter of Alma, four great- grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at Corinth Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Nettles and Rev. Brian Gill officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at the church Friday evening between 6 and 9 P M. The family is meeting at the residence on Radio Station Road.

Active pallbearers will be, Quitman and Gary Allen, Danny and Robert Taylor, Pat Dell and Benny Carter. All others in attendance will be considered as honorary escort. Crosby Funeral Home is in charge of all the arrangements.
