Greenleaf (alias Green) the eldest of thirteen children of Edward Carter III and Ruth Dyer was born on 24 August 1798 at Brooksville, Maine.[1]

Green was married twice. He married 1) Judith Howard (1799-1836), the daughter of Samuel M. and Hannah (Billings) Howard on 4 October 1821 at Montville, Waldo, Maine.[2] They had seven children born at Montville:
Elizabeth Carter (b. 12 May 1823; d. )[3] m. 20 Sep 1846 at Montville, ME, Robie F. Carter (1819-1897)
Mary A. Carter (b. 15 Feb 1932; d. 23 Feb 1920)[6] m. 18 Jun 1857 at Lawrence, MA, Albert H. Cram (1824-1888)[7]
Arthur E. Carter (b. 1833; d. ) m.
Martha C. Carter (b. 1834; d. ) m.
Albert M. Carter (b. 1 May 1835; d. 8 Jul 1904, Belfast, ME)[8]m.
Judith (Howard) Carter died in 1836.
Green married 2) Joanna (Carter) Foster (1795-1885), the daughter of Isaac Powers and Joanna (Gay) Carter married 2) Green on 30 September 1838 at Montville, Waldo, Maine.[9] They had one child born at Montville:
Ira Frank Carter (b. 17 Oct 1839; d. 1898, Worcester, MA)[10] m. 1 May 1865 at Unity, ME, Eunice M. Mussey (1845-)[11]
This was Joanna (Carter) Foster's second marriage. She married 1) Thomas Dresser Foster (1782-1835) on 1 December 1812 at Montville, Maine.
Death and Burial
Greenleaf "Green" Carter died on 1 March 1877 in his 79th year at Montville.[12]H is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, South Montville, Waldo, Maine.[13]
