Biography

Thomas Carter was born August 2, 1765, in Halifax county, Virginia, a son of Theodorick Carter, III and Judith Cunningham, married April 16, 1764, in Prince Edward county, Virginia. [1]

Theodorick Carter granted deeds to Thomas, William, Jesse, Samuel and Charles Carter, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Grantor index to deeds, trust deeds, liens, etc., A-D, 1767-1889 (indexes v. 1-95 and also indexes the wills in the early vols.) -- Grantor index to deeds, trust deeds, liens, etc., E-K, 1767-1889 -- Grantor index to deeds, trust deeds, liens, etc., L-R, 1767-1889 -- Grantor index to deeds, trust deeds, liens, etc., S-Z, 1767-1889. Theodorick Carter's Will was executed 13 July 1805; Executors: son Alexander, Sons-in-law Richard E. Bennett & Matthew Cabaniss; Heirs: sons Charles, Samuel, William, Alexander, Nathaniel, Thomas & Jesse, Daughters: Elizabeth RICHARDSON, Ann BENNETT, and Susanna CABANISS. [2]

On July 26, 1798, in Halifax county, Virginia, Thomas married Mary Powell, a daughter of David Powell. [3]

Thomas is found on the United States Census of 1820, residing in Meadsville, Halifax county, Virginia. [4] On the 1850 census, 75 year old Thomas is residing in Gallatin, Copiah county, Mississippi. [5] Also residing in the home are:

  • Johnson Powell, age 47
  • Anna Carter, age 52
  • Anna J. Carter, age 16
  • Carroll J. Carter, age 14
  • Frances Carter, age 10
  • Wiley Johnson, age 17
  • Moses Johnson, age 20
  • Ann Norris Johnson, age 16

Thomas Powell died in February, 1855, in Copiah County, Mississippi and is buried in the New Zion Cemetery, in Crystal Springs, Copiah County, Mississippi. His Find A Grave is connected to that of wife, Susannah Will, born 1797, who died November 18, 1852 and is also buried in New Zion Cemetery. There are photographs of both of their headstones on their Find A Grave memorials.

Part of the confusion is met with his Find A Grave that states that this Thomas Carter was also the husband of Celia McDonald. In actuality, Celia McDonald is the wife of Thomas Carter who died in Perry, Mississippi.
