Biography

Frank Lyman Carter was born in 1871, the son of William Carter and Louise Catherine Barnes. His birthday of 8 Sept. is recorded on the 1901 census, referenced below, and the 1911 census records his birth as Sep. 1871. Frank's mother died shortly after his first birthday. He was then raised by his great-aunt Margaret (Brill) Turner, with whom he was recorded on the 1881 census.[1] Note that his age is mis-recorded on this census as "2" instead of "12".

On 1 Jan. 1890, Frank married Ida May Chamberlain. The couple appeared together on the 1891 census, with their first child.[2] The family continued to live in West Bolton on the 1901 census.[3] It is interesting to note that the woman who raised Frank, with living with his family in 1901. On the 1911 Census, his father was living with him.[4]

In all, Frank and Ida had the following seven children:

  1. Marion Hilda, b. 9 Aug. 1890; m. Herbert James Robinson, 1 Sep. 1909; d. 24 Nov. 1972
  2. Gerald Clayton, b. 24 Mar. 1892; m. Chloe Brooks Ladd, 26 Oct. 1916; d. 13 Oct. 1918
  3. Hazel Margaret, b. 14 June 1894; m. Roy Chase Sanborn, 26 Jan. 1921; d. 30 Oct. 1990
  4. Marvin Stanley, b. 9 May 1896; m. Mary Kingston Clarke, 2 July 1919; d. 31 Oct. 1957
  5. Frank Melvin, b. 18 Oct. 1899; m. Minnie Luetta Pihl, 30 June 1925; d. 19 July 1948
  6. Verna Elvira, b. 6 Dec. 1905; m. John Paavo Kononen, 20 Apr. 1930; d. 5 June 1996, and
  7. Berkley Lawrence, b. 28 Nov. 1908; m. Beatrice Pierce, 4 Apr. 1931; d. Nov. 1984.

In about 1912, Frank moved his family to St. Albans, Vermont, where his older brother had been living since 1903 and where they were recorded on the 1920 census.[5] From there he moved to Enfield, New Hampshire, where he would spend the rest of his life.[6] Frank, Ida and their two youngest were recorded in Enfield on the 1930 census.[7] As a widower, Frank was recorded on the 1940 census in Lebanon, NH living with his youngest daughter.[8]

He passed away in 1944, at the age of 72.[9] As explained in the attached Obituary, Frank was the victim of an accidental death, while working as a guard in the American Woolen Company in Enfield, where he was crushed between an out-of-control truck and a gate. The funeral was held on 12 March 1944 at the Methodist Church in Lebanon, NH, then the body was returned to Knowlton, Quebec for burial. Frank was survived by three sons and three daughters. His oldest son and his wife had pre-deceased him in 1918 and 1933 respectively.
