Biography

Millard Walter Carter was born in 1875 in Appling County, Georgia, in the Memorial Church community of southeastern Appling County, on a farm that is still in the family. He was the second child of Philip Marion Carter and Elizabeth Tomberlin. He grew up on the family farm and took over the running of the farm when his father retired. According to a story told by Millard's wife, Dealpha Edenfield, Philip Marion Carter left the farm heavily mortgaged and shrunken in size to 40 acres. Millard worked to pay off the debt and expanded the farm, although it was never a large farm. According to his youngest daughter, Madie Carter, he was known in the community as the Peacemaker, because of his ability to settle disputes between and among his neighbors.

He died in 1940, due to shock due to operation for intestinal obstruction chicrosis of bowel due adhesions from Chr[onic] appendix and fr[om] diverticulitis". He is buried in Memorial Church cemetery, a short distance east of his home.
