Biography

Jane married Thomas Lothrop/Lowthrop about 1589; his previous wife Mary had been buried 26 June 1588, and his first known child with Jane (Margaret) was baptised 15 February 1590/1591 at Etton, Yorkshire.[1] Jane was his third wife.

Thomas died in 1606 and Jane is mentioned in his will dated 5 October 1606: "Jaine, my wieff, lease for 12 yr. for ed. of my younge children whom I give unto her with these legacies .... Jane my wieff and Lawrence my sonne, lease of Westwood, leas in territories of Scarbrough ... (after various bequests) The rest to Jane, my wief, Richard, Lawrence, Marks, Joseph, Bartholomew, my sons, and Margaret, Luce, and Jane Lowthorp, my daughters whom I make executors."[2][3]

After Thomas's death, Jane remarried to John Coppendale in 1607. Paver's marriage Licences has "John Coppendale, of Eastrop, and Jane Lowthorpe, of Elton, Wid. — at Elton" (sic).[4] She is mentioned in the will of her son Richard 8 February 1640/1641 as his "mother, Jane Coppendale". She is also a legatee under this name in the will of Richard's widow Dorothy 15 May 1641.[5]

Research Notes

Maiden name - Jane's maiden name is given here as Carter, with a marriage on 11 November 1588 at Etton, but there is no marriage on that date in the register. There are only two marriages in 1588, the nearest being Thomas Toye and Alice Simpson on 17 November 1588. A scan of the register page can be viewed from the Toye marriage on Find my Past (subscription only).[6] This marriage date and name are mentioned in the book John Lothropp (1584-1653) : a puritan biography & genealogy, by R W. Price, page 24.[7] His source is given as "Culleton's .... Sheet A", presumably Culleton's of London Genealogical Collection. This was a 19th and early 20th century collection of research papers which were microfilmed in 1959. The microfilms are held at Salt Lake City but the original research papers are lost.[8]

However, there is a marriage of a Thomas Lowthrop and Jane Brenner at Leconfield in 1589.[9] This is only 3 miles from Etton and would seem a likely marriage.

Shouldn't her last name at birth be changed to Brenner to match her marriage record. Also, she should be detached from unsourced Richard Carter.
