William Rawdon Carter was born on 21 October 1890 in Woodville, Manawatū-Whanganui, New Zealand, son of Frank Rawdon Carter and Alice Elizabeth Carter.
He married Irene Heatherbell Freeman in 1917. The children of William and Irene were:
