John Cork is found in Henderson, Jefferson County, NY in the 1840, 1850 US Census. Living with him and his Wife Anna, was Henry Curliss(Curtis) the son of Susan Cork Place Curtis. There is a family story that John was a French Canadian born as Jeanne Baptiste Cartier. G Chase has multiple Ancestry DNA and MyHeritage matches who are descendants of John Cork, through his sons John and William. G Chase and other Descendants of John Cork have Multiple matches with descendants of the Cartier and Kirkey Family. There is documentation that the Surname of Kirkey was adopted by a Jeanne Baptiste Cartier, baptized in the St Regis Parish, in Quebec(Cornwall Genealogy Archives). Cork seems to be a corrupt version of the Kirk or Kirky name.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

John Cork born 1785 French Mills (now Guilderland), Albany County, New York. The county is right next to Columbia County where his wife Anna Van Alen was born.

Dede,

Please share with me what you may have relating to Anna Van Alen.

There are two two different Van Alen lines and I am not certain which line that Anna belongs. I have strong DNA connections with the line originating in New Jersey. I also some matches with connections to the New York(Kinderhook) line but some of those may be connected to me through other relationships.

The Revolutionary displaced some members of the New Jersey to Canada and my Anna my have descended from that line. French Mills is basically on the border close to the intersection of Upper and Lower Canada and the State of New York. During the early 1800s the Border was very porous with people moving freely back and forth across the border.

I have been able to develop a theoretically line showing Anna descending from the Kinderhook Van Alen but it lacks confirming paper or DNA documentation to my satisfaction.

Thank you for anything you may be able to contribute. Gerry Chase
