Notes

There are many photos of Cartiles under Samuel Cartile on ancestry. My belief is that it is of grandchildren of William. If anyone recognizes anyone, please let me know.

Letter from grandson William. Samuel was a fine looking man with fair hair groomed with curls on each side as was the custom. He was a mariner. He and Margaret resided in Dutch Village Rd at Armdale, they had 8 children. 1869 Registry of Deeds, vol 161, pg 586, Halifax Cty. Registered January 19. Thomas Cartile of Purcells Cove, fisherman, Samuel Cartile of Halifax, yeoman and Margaret his wife, and Hannah Cartile Walsh of Purcells Cove, widow, sold the Pleasant St property was sold to Louis Petitmaitre for 500 pounds. Whereas William (Jr) departed this life intestate, his heirs at law, the above Thomas and Samuel Cartile and Hannah Walsh are entitled to all real estate. The property is described as adjoining John Trider's property and was located at South Barrington St near Morris St.

Samuel according to 1881 census was a waterman, RC and of Irish descent. From grandson William J Cartile He was the son of William Cartile (Cartyle,Certile, Cartiel, Cartille,Certilt) and Hannah Purcell. Came to Canada with his brother. He was issued a pilots license to pilot Halifax Harbour and transported merchandise to Halifax, One brother stayed in Halifax and the other returned to France. ( 1881 census Irish???) Gubelino Cartile and Agnes Honora Hutchinson were sponsors to Samuel's daughter Anna Marie. Deeds to land they owned had to be cleared in Spain ? They must have been stone quarry men, they first lived in a cave they made under the cliff on which his house stood overlooking the Northwest Arm. They had contracts with the government to supply granite blocks to build Dalhousie University.

Thanks to Jerry Byer The record I have for a Cartile in Halifax cty records is in 1821 when William Cartile (Cartyle) married Hannah Purcell of Portuguese Cove. Samuel Purcell was Hannah's father and when that family bought the property which is now called Purcells' Cove,Samuel Purcell deeded a piece of the Purcell land in Portuguese Cove to Hannah and William Cartile and to Hannah's brother John. After Wm Cartile's death, Hannah moved to Purcell's Cove and appeared in census records as Hannah Walsh.

1831 Land transaction: Register of deeds, Halifax cty, book 53, p 28. Indenture Oct 30 1828, registered Jun 9 1831, Samuel and Mary Purcell, at then entrance to the mouth of North West Arm (called Russell Island) do give to my daughter Hannah, wife of William Carteil of Portuguese Cove three certain lots in Portuguese Cove known as Purcells' farm beginning at the corner of John Percils land at a place called the Spring, until it comes to Edward Bower's land, northwest by said land till it comes to George Sadler's land east by said land till it comes to the lake, thence by said land till it comes to land of John Percil, south till it comes to land of John Purcill,Sr thence to the beginning of the lake,28 acres.Signed SauelPursel Mary (X) Pursel.

Thanks to Iris Shea Samuel and Margaret (Fitzharris ) Cartile built Sunnyside, the name of the estate where Mumford Rd meets the former Dutch Village Rd (now Joseph Howe Ave ). Following their deaths, it was eventually purchased by the Piercey family 1916. Anna Leonowens lived in the house with her daughter prior to Piercey's ownership, There is a beautiful architectural description at NS Archives in the deeds of what the house and grounds looked like when the Cartiles had it built. Margaret Fitzharris was the stepdaughter of Charles Piercey.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
