Thomas was born in Astbury, Cheshire, England, in 1835. He was the son of Thomas Cartlidge and Mary Mottram. He was baptized on August 9, 1835, in Astbury, at St Mary.[1] He was enumerared in the 1841 census [2] as a six year old, and one of five children, residing with his parents in Astbury. In 1851, [3] the family was living in
Moreton Cum Alcumlow, Cheshire. He was fifteen and a "Laborer".
