Biography

Herbert Cartlidge was born in Staffordshire, England.

Herbert was born in Wolstanton, Staffordshire, England, in 1881.^[1] His birth was registered in the third quarter. He was the son of Albert Cartlidge and Mary Ann Machin. He was baptized on October 2, 1881, in Burslem, Staffordshire, at St Paul.^[2] He was enumerated in the 1891 census ^[3] as a nine year old, and one of five children residing with his parents in Betchton, Cheshire. In 1901, ^[4] the family had returned to Staffordshire, and was living in Biddulph. (Registration Distict Leek). Herbert was nineteen, single, and a "Coal Miner Underground".

Herbert married Sarah Ellen Hancock in 1904.^[5] The marriage was registered in the second quarter in Wolstanton. The couple would have at least four children. Herbert was enumerated in the 1911 census ^[6] residing in Biddulph with Sarah and four children, ages six to under one year old. His occupation, "Coal Miner Hewer".

Herbert passed away in 1929.^[7] His death was registered in the first quarter in Leek, Staffordshire.
