Samuel Cartwright was born on September 7, 1788 in High Holborn, London, England, son of Thomas Cartwright (~1755– ) and Catherine Bentley (~1755– ).
Samuel, child of Thomas Cartwright & Catherine Cartwright, was born on 7 September 1788 in Holborn, London.[1]
He was baptised at Eagle Street Baptist Church, Red Lion Square Samuel, son of Thomas Cartwright & Catharine Cartwright, was born on 7 September 1788 in St Andrews, Holborn, Middlesex, England.[2]
He became a successful dental surgeon, practicing at 32 Old Burlington Street, London from 1811 to 1857. He was a fellow of the Linnean Society, Geological Society and Royal Society. He retired in 1847 and his practice was taken over by his son Samuel. In 1858 he suffered from an "apoplectic seizure" from which he never fully recovered. He died in his country home, Nizell's House near Tonbridge, Kent, in 1864.
In the 1841 census, Samuel is shown as living with Ann Cartwright and his 10-month old son Stewart D. Cartwright. The census notes that this Ann was aged 30-34 (which would make her date of birth 1807-1811) and was not born in the county of Middlesex. Who was this Ann?
This woman's reported age and place of birth does not match his first wife Ann Hickson, who was 55 years old on that date, not 30-34, and was born in Middlesex (not to mention that she would have been a bit old to have a baby).
It was certainly not his daughter Ann Hawes, who was living up the street with her husband and children.
The reported age and place of birth fits his wife Ann Bloxsome, who was around 30 in 1841 and was born in Gloucestershire - except for the important point that she was married to another man at the time (who died in 1847). Did she and Samuel live together openly and have two children out of wedlock? Hardly possible, not least because when she did marry Samuel in 1848 her uncle, the Rev. John Bloxsome, officiated at the wedding. He would hardly have agreed to do so if his niece had been living with Samuel in a scandalous relationship.
Who was this Ann then? My hypothesis is that Samuel had a third wife, also named Ann. His first wife, Ann Hickson, would have died in the 1820s or 1830s after bearing his first four children. His second wife, the mystery Ann, would have married him around 1839, bore Stewart and Laura, and died before 1848. He then married Ann Bloxsome in 1848 and she survived him.
Unfortunately I cannot find any records to prove this.
