Research Notes

Many trees have listed Daniel McCarty and Sinah Ball as Mary's parents. Daniel McCarty and Sinah Ball did have a daughter Mary. However, it is believed that she never married and did not have children (according to a family history of Daniel's family). Apparently this family used the name McCarty in KY, but Mary and parents used Carty. There are 1818-1819 land records in Russell County Tax Lists concerning Isaiah Salyer & David Carty. Some think that Mary's father was a David, but these dates would probably be after his death, possibly a brother?

Daughter of David James Carty Sr. and Sinah (Ball) McCarty (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ball-5357)

I don't think this is the right set of parents.

Seems like Sinah (Ball) McCarty was married to Dennis McCarty and they had a daughter named Mary who was possible a different person then this Mary who married Isaiah Salyers.

I'll chime in one more time. DNA strongly suggests that Mary Carty was the sister of John Carty of Surry, NC. The dates match as does the general location. I haven't found any marriage records for Mary and Isaiah in either North Carolina or Virginia.

I am a Carty and the name was always "Carty". Any reference to "McCarty" tends to be a record keeping error rather than a surname choice. I find no evidence anywhere that she was associated with the Daniel McCarty family although her daughter-in-law, Nancy McCarty, appears to have been.

Buck Lyon and I have a 21.8 cM match on Chromosome 16 and have found no other common ancestors.

Hmmm.

Very interesting. Thanks for chiming in, again. How can I help with a furthering of the Mary saga?

Thank you. My research goal has been to find the history of John Carty. He was my 4th GGF. It has been the family brick wall. Here's what I know:

1771 he was on a tax list in Surry, NC. There are clear records of land transactions and court records in Surry through 1803 when he sold his land. In 1807 he was in Cumberland County, KY with all of his children and some of his neighbors and in-laws.

What I believe: Based on a combination of hunch and research he was b. abt 1748 in Kent, MD. His father was Moses Carty (John named a son Moses) and his mother unknown but possibly a Maslin. About 1770 he m. Hannah Haines, dau of William Haines of Cecil, MD. Her father's will names dau. Hannah Carty, wife of John. Moses Carty d. in Kent, MD in 1780. In his will he named children Martha, Ann, Mary, Sarah, John and James Cartey.

When I compare the surnames in Surry, NC and Kent, MD I find a group that made the move over a period of about 10 years so am fairly confident they all tie together. Isaiah Salyer is harder to track but was definitely in NC for a while. It looks like his first 2 children were born in NC. Then there was a 10 year break between children. I saw a posting from a descendant of one the first two that their mother died in NC and Isaiah remarried. So he married Mary Carty between 1775-1785. In 1790 he was on a tax list in Russell, VA.

I have all of my notes and can re-create the sequence. Mary could have been John's daughter considering she was still having children in 1805; or she could have been a younger sister.

LATER: Edited. She is the right age to be his oldest daughter who we have not identified. She shows up on the census but no name.

I have been looking for information about when and where Mary Carty and Isaiah were married. I do not find records in either NC or VA. Any help will be appreciated.

Saylor-601 and Carty-18 do not represent the same person because: A. is supposedly the first wife of Isaiah while Mary is the second wife. There is some confusion over which children belong with which mother, but if he was married twice then there should be entries for both wives.

I have an Autosomal DNA match with descendants of this Mary Carty through her son Isaiah who was also married to a Carty. I would like to connect with someone who is descended through another of the children to confirm whether my match is from Mary or Isaiah Jr's wife Nancy.

McCarty-3210 and Carty-18 appear to represent the same person because: Which is the correct last name?

Is it okay if we correct her death place. It should be Big Moccasin. Big Mockerson doesn't exist in that area to my knowledge.

A Spradlin site (no longer valid) that I printed and a message from Kim Watt on http://www.breeze.org/kk/f614.htm both say she is their child. It says it was in the Russell County Census 1820-1830 on Russell County US Genwebsite.

Salyer-831 and Carty-18 appear to represent the same person because: It looks like Salyer-831 is her married surname. Do you want to merge into Carty-18 or create a NEW profile and merge both of these into McCarty?

Hi, her marriage in 1752 is before she was born, according to this profile. Which date is correct?
